Abstract
The present study aims to examine the conceptual non-equivalence of specialized shipbuilding and marine engineering terms in Russian–English–Persian trilingual translation and to explain the factors affecting the degree of conceptual correspondence and the transfer of technical information conveyed by these terms. In terms of its purpose, the study is applied, and in terms of its methodology, it adopts a descriptive-analytical and comparative approach. The data were collected from reliable specialized sources and the trilingual dictionary of specialized maritime terms compiled by the author of the present study and were analyzed from terminological and translation-theoretical perspectives. The unit of analysis was the specialized term in relation to its concept and specialized context. The analytical procedure involved identifying the term, determining its concept, extracting its distinctive features, examining its function and technical relations, comparing the three linguistic systems, determining the type of equivalence or non-equivalence, and evaluating the transfer strategy. The findings showed that non-equivalence in this field does not merely result from differences in lexical form or syntactic structure; rather, in some cases, it stems from differences in conceptual boundaries, the selection of salient features, the scope of application, and the degree of technical information density. The findings also demonstrated that structural differences among Russian, English, and Persian terms do not necessarily indicate conceptual non-equivalence and that formal difference, full or near equivalence, partial equivalence, conceptual non-equivalence, and terminological gaps can be distinguished. ..
