Abstract
This study examined simultaneous interpreting as an exceptional bilingual mode, focusing on relationships between cognitive and affective variables and their influence on speech disfluency. Cognitive tasks, self-report questionnaires, and an interpreting task assessed 71 proficient Persian–English bilingual adults; data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling. Path analysis revealed two significant direct effects: greater cognitive flexibility deficits were associated with higher anxiety levels, while greater selective attention deficits were linked to lower neuroticism. No other direct effects or mediation effects were statistically significant in this sample. These findings suggest that specific cognitive vulnerabilities may shape interpreters’ emotional experience during high-demand bilingual performance, with implications for interpreter training and bilingual cognitive-affective interventions.
